Self-contained biological indicators (SCBI’s) are available for monitoring the efficacy of Steam, H2O2/ Plasma and Ethylene Oxide/ Dry heat sterilization processes. SCBI’s contain bacterial spores on a paper carrier (or tyvek disc for H2O2/plasma) plus a sealed glass ampoule within a vented plastic vial.

The glass ampoule contains a proprietary formulation of soybean casein digest culture media with a pH indicator. The pH indicator remains purple when there is no spore growth and yellow when there is spore growth. This allows quick visual determination of sterilization failures (yellow colour).

Etigam presents a self-contained biological indicator for monitoring steam or ethylene oxide sterilization. It contains bacterial spores on a paper carrier packaged within a small, thermoplastic culture tube. Inside the thermoplastic culture tube is a sealed glass ampoule of specially formulated soybean casein digest culture medium containing a color indicator which turns a dramatic yellow when spores grow. The Etigam self-contained biological indicator is easy-to-use and produces visual results within 48 hours without laboratory transfers.
Simply place the biological indicator inside products or product packages to be sterilized. The “inoculated package” is then placed in the sterilizer and processed. Upon removal from the sterilizer, the biological indicator is “activated”. Using a crushing device, flex the sides of the soft plastic culture tube, break the glass ampoule allowing the medium to mix with the spores. The “activated” biological indicator is then placed in an appropriate incubator for 24 hours (steam) or 48 hours (EtO). If any spores survive the process, the medium will turn yellow.

The ETIGAM BRIGHT-CHEQ is a convenient Biological Indicator Monitoring System for steam sterilization processes.
The BRIGHT-CHEQ biological indicator is a selfcontained unit such that the inoculated spore strip and the recovery medium are housed within the same primary package.
The BRIGHT-CHEQ incubator provides optimal recovery conditions for the Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores. Each incubation cell has dedicated hardware to continuously monitor the status of each incubated unit for microbial activity.

One or more BRIGHT-CHEQ indicators are sterilized with the load. Upon removal from the sterilizer, the BRIGHT-CHEQ biological indicator is activated by flexing the culture tube to break the media ampoule inside, allowing the growth medium to mix with the paper spore strip.
The activated indicator is then placed in the BRIGHT-CHEQ incubator.
If any spores have survived the sterilization process, the bacteria will grow during incubation and cause a colourchange from purple to yellow.
The BRIGHT-CHEQ incubator will monitor and record all samples, alert the user by an audible alarm and a change of the LED status. A report will be generated and printed automatically upon any detected failed sterilization cycle, or upon completion of the set incubation time.

This recommended incubation time of 10 hours meet the CDRH FDA RIT protocol.
The BRIGHT-CHEQ BI does not rely on degradation of chemical substances or enzyme results to forecast anticipated biological activity, but is a rapid-acting true biological indicator
